Cairns Style Urban Design Guide

Cairns Style is unique in that it identifies elements of local, tropical character and translates them into everyday language for a variety of intended end users including landowners, consultants, councillors and planners.

It is a first of its kind for the Region and has been incredibly well received because of its ability to provide readers with some basic skills to recognise the elements of the built environment which they valued and a vocabulary to talk about these elements.

The CABE is a UK organisation aimed at improving quality of life through design. CABE provide publications on how to develop well-designed buildings, places and spaces.

This is an unbelievable list of quality resources. My Favourite is Master Planning Guide – great for new and experienced planners. It is like urban design 101.

 

Healthy Spaces and Places

Healthy Spaces and Places is a landmark project demonstrating the importance of taking a national perspective to managing our environments, particularly how the physical characteristics of where Australians live, work and play can influence their physical and mental health and wellbeing.

The website is a result of a collaboration between the Australian Local Government Association, the National Heart Foundation of Australia and the Planning Institute of Australia was funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.

This site provides guidance on good urban design – summarising the principles of urban design, how they can be applied and the processes which lead to successful places. Chapters of the publications can be downloaded throughout and you can also download full copies of both publications.

Delivering quality places - practical guidance on the steps that can be taken and barriers that need to be overcome during policy and project development to improve the quality of place delivered.
